Built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, the Castle of Good Hope is a pentagonal bastion fort. The outer defenses consist of thick stone walls and five corner bastions originally designed for military lookouts.

Today, visitors can walk along these upper levels. Keep to the marked paths, as some areas are restricted. The surface includes uneven cobblestones, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

The Five Bastions

15 minsSkyline views

The fort has five defensive corners named Leerdam, Buuren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau, and Oranje. These points originally served as military outlooks over the shoreline before land reclamation moved the coast. Walk along the edges for excellent vantage points of the Cape Town city skyline.

These grassy pathways run along the top of the castle's solid stone walls. They connect the bastions and offer an open walking route above the courtyards. This elevated walkway provides some of the best unobstructed views of Table Mountain and Lion's Head.
